Why women should lift weights
“But I don’t want to get big muscles” is what I often hear from females when I talk about strength training or lifting weights. Luckily for us females we aren’t genetically built to get that body builder huge. To be able to get that lean toned body that most women want we need to do weight training and not only that, have a read of all the benefits of weight training :
Burn more fat and increase our metabolism
We all know as we get older our metabolism slows down and we start losing muscle mass. By lifting weights we can kick start our metabolism which helps burn more calories.
Get stronger - Not bulkier
Women don’t develop big muscles from weight training, we have typically 30 times less of the hormones that cause muscle hypertrophy.
Decrease your risk of Osteoporosis
Weight training can increase mineral density which means through lifting weights you engage muscles that pull on the tendons which in turn, pull on the bone - this added stress makes our bones stronger.
Healthier Heart
Although blood pressure will go up and down during your workout, research shows it can be a powerful way to protect your heart in the long run.
You will feel much happier and less stressed
Weight training has the power to induce pleasure by releasing endorphins, the “feel good” chemical in the brain. It also reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol, relieving feelings of anxiety and agitation.
Decrease the risk of injury, back pain and Arthritis
Not only does weight training build stronger muscles, it also builds stronger connective tissues and increases joint stability.
